Resizing a ring begins with making a cut into the ring's band.

From here, to size a ring up, additional metal is added to the band to increase its circumference. To size a ring down, a small section of the band is removed.

In either case, the band is then soldered back together, buffed, and polished so the resized area blends in with the rest of the ring.

The ring resizing process should not leave an obvious mark on your piece.

There are some exceptions, though.

In certain cases, a faint solder line may be visible at the point where the band was cut and rejoined. The degree to which this line is noticeable depends on the type and color of the metal, how closely the solder matches the original piece, and the finish of the ring.

There are limits to how much a ring can be sized up or down, and this is mainly because we want to preserve the structural integrity of the ring.

Most rings can be safely resized up or down by about two sizes while keeping the band strong and the design intact.

No, not all rings can be resized. The possibility of resizing a ring mainly depends on its material and design.

Some metals, such as tungsten, are extremely hard. For rings made out of these metals, resizing isn’t possible.

Certain ring designs can also be difficult or impossible to resize.

For instance, this can be seen with tension-set rings. The setting section of these rings relies on the pressure of the band itself to hold the center stone in place. By altering the size of the band, the setting can be compromised.
